Saving money is at the top of my list right now! My husband and I have been planning on purchasing our first home for quite a while now then the pandemic hit and we put it on the backburner for a while.

Now, I love where we currently live but I definitely am trying to not break the bank so I can spend on new home decor when we do end up moving!

Since living in our rental, I’ve compiled a list of 10 Best Home Decor Tips On A Budget and am excited to share it with you all!

HERE ARE 10 BEST HOME DECOR TIPS ON A BUDGET:

Buy Things Slowly

I cannot stress this enough! I see so many people get excited when they first move out and they end up buying way too many things then down the line, they realize that the things they bought aren’t exactly what they want and feel the need to invest in higher quality things.

Would you believe me if I told you we slept on a mattress on the floor for 2 months because I was trying to pick a bed frame that I absolutely loved? Our bed frame was definitely an investment but I don’t regret it at all because I took the time to choose it and made sure it matched the overall home decor theme of my home.

Take your time to buy things slowly and if you need to, there is nothing wrong with borrowing or getting small things from your local Dollar Store.

Purchase Versatile Decor

Beautiful colourful pieces can definitely be eyecatching but it’s super hard to switch around your home decor if needed because chances are colourful pieces are very particular.

I am a neutral home decor lover but I know that some people love colourful items. My best advice especially if you’re trying to save money is to buy versatile home decor that you can switch up easily. For example, buy a set of quality picture frames that are a neutral colour like black, white etc but place colourful art inside the frame! This way, you’re able to switch out the art per season, save money, and not buy new frames and not be stuck with the same thing all year round.

The same goes for vases! If you love having fresh flowers in the house, use a clear or neutral coloured vase then switch up the gorgeous flowers when needed!

Invest In Quality Frames

Similar to my point above, wall art and decor are very much a forever trend! People will always be creative and develop what wall art/decor is. It doesn’t take much to really make your home pop and wall art/decor is one of the big factors that’ll help you decorate your house the way you want it but at the same time not break the bank.

I know how tempting it is to purchase frames from the dollar store but I suggest checking out places like Michaels, IKEA, Amazon etc for frames that are affordable but also not terrible in quality.

Thrift

I am finding a love of thrifting lately and it makes me so happy to find things that have been previously loved and cherished for an affordable price.

It may take a while to find some really good quality home decor because, in all honesty, there is a lot of junk that people donate to thrift stores that really should just go into the trash! BUT once you get the hang of it and know especially what you’re looking for, it is much easier to navigate and you’ll come home happy every time!

Keep An Eye An Sales

If you’ve been looking at things for quite a while, try and bookmark certain home decor pieces that you love and check them weekly! There are of course, always certain pieces that you adore but can justify buying at full price and I totally get it!

I waited until the price of my white Kitchen Aid mixer was slashed in half before I bought it and it took a while! There were so many times when I would just want to cave and find it at full price but I waited and it was so worth it!

I literally Google searched my Kitchen Aid mixer every week and reserved the money (at full price) until I was ready and with the money I saved, I was able to put it towards something else I wanted!

DIY What You Can

I know, I know. Not everyone loves or has the patience to DIY decor and I totally get it. DIY projects don’t exactly need to be crafty but more practical for sure.

I like doing DIY projects because I like the control and making a piece of home decor specific to my needs! Sometimes I will go to the store and see something I like but it’s not exactly what I want and instead of settling for something I don’t exactly love, I try and buy the materials so I can make it myself!

Not all home decor is one size fits all but it most definitely can be tailored to your needs! With the internet at our fingertips, it’s been so much easier to learn new things!

Less Is More

Whether you have a small or big place, filling it to the brim doesn’t make it any more or less homey. Your home is a representation of your well-being and home is where you come to unwind and relax after a long day.

Now, this does not apply to everyone as some people love filling their homes with lots of character but while you’re on a budget especially, you can build up and just pick pieces that you know and love and over time build more.

If you love modern and minimalism in your life then buying less quantity of pieces and more quality pieces goes just a long way! Clutter makes me stressed and I try to keep my countertops as clear as possible so less for me to clean, less for me to stress about!

Work On One Room At A Time

You’re probably super excited to get started on decorating your home and I totally get it! With your move and settling into your new place, budgeting and living your everyday life and routine, it’ll be super hectic. Every time you do some online shopping and see something cute or head into your local department store, you’ll be tempted to pick up something for your place.

From first-hand experience, I know how fast I lost control of my budget by buying little things and still feeling like my home hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface to “look” decorated.

Take your time and focus on one room at a time. Set a budget for every room and every month or two work on that room then move on to the next. You’ll be in better control of your spending and be able to really focus on the quality pieces of home decor you want in each room while staying on budget.

Keep Everything Organized

If you’re a spreadsheet person, do a spreadsheet! If you’re a planner person, keep up with your planner! Any way that suits your organization’s style works as long as you keep track of what you’ve spent and your budget moving forward.

Money is not the only thing to keep organized too. You’ll want to keep organized everything you’ve bought so you don’t end up buying the same things over. My trick is that as soon as I get home after buying some furniture or home/kitchen pieces, I will immediately put it in its place.

By immediately putting things where they belong, you remember that you already have that certain item and while you’re out, you’re not tempted to just pick one up because you see it and think you haven’t bought it yet! I’ve done this a lot with little home things like containers or vases etc.

Accept Home Decor From Family/Friends

Last but not least, if you have lots of family and friends, don’t be afraid to take what they don’t want! I am pretty particular with my things but when I have friends and family move or offer things that they’ll be donating shortly, I definitely look and try and see if I can DIY anything or use it before I turn it down.

Have you ever heard of the term “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”? While that’s right! Sometimes the best decor comes from loved ones!

I hope you enjoyed reading my list of 10 Best Home Decor Tips On A Budget! I plan to move in the next year or so I’ll be taking my own advice soon!

I’m supposed to move out soon, and the one thing I will definitely do is not rush to buy furniture. I’d rather get high quality pieces slower than buy a whole bunch of cheap stuff that I don’t love. And, I also have been a big fan of thrifting! There are a whole bunch of really cool curated thrifted instagrams, so I follow those, and I can grab some really cute stuff for cheap! Great post xx

These are all essential tips when buying decor on a budget; thank you for sharing. I love that you took your time to purchase things.

Keeping your eye on the sales is a great tip! I love bookmarking things I’d like and seeing if the price drops. Working on one room at a time is another valuable tip. I’m the kind of person that would get too excited and want to decorate everything, but then I’d end up running around like a headless chicken. 😅 Great tip and reminder! I love the idea of setting a budget for each room as well.

    Thank you for sharing! 😊

I’m a sucker for home interior decor. While I do keep myself on a budget the only thing I would splurge on is local artwork. The other materials I’m pretty stingy when buying stuff that you can find anywhere else.
