Just like most families, the excitement of moving into a new place begins to wear off when you realize what needs to be done – packing all your belongings. It’s not an easy process once you think about it and since I’ve moved a few times I thought I had it all figured out.  This time around, I was determined to make our moving experience easy and simplified, and thankfully I was able to pull it off with as little stress as possible!

Want a stress-free, simplified move? Read more for a few tips that helped!

  • HERE ARE 5 IDEAS TO STAY ORGANIZED DURING A BIG MOVE:
    • Declutter
    • Stock up on bins or boxes in advance
    • Pack non-essentials ahead of time
    • Label everything
    • Hire a moving company

HERE ARE 5 IDEAS TO STAY ORGANIZED DURING A BIG MOVE:

Declutter

I have always been a fan of decluttering my home and re-organizing every couple of months, but this is extremely beneficial when you are preparing to move. After all, who wants to take the time to pack and move something you don’t plan on using in your new home? Pro-Tip: Start by decluttering the small areas of your home, such as your kitchen drawers and closets. After this is move on to the main rooms, and then the garage. What to do with the things you don’t need? Have a garage sale or donate! It will feel so good to free up that space and know that you don’t need to move it to the next house.

Stock up on bins or boxes in advance

The moment a move is mentioned in your household, begin hoarding bins and boxes. You will not regret having these stockpiled in your garage to pull out as you start packing your life away. We always keep a stock of large cardboard boxes on hand in our garage, so this has served as a good starting point for us. Pro-Tip: Need affordable packing supplies? Hardware stores like The Home Depot have cardboard boxes of every size you can think of at a very affordable price.

Pack non-essentials ahead of time

As your bin and box collection starts to ramp up, begin packing up all your non-essentials. I recommend starting by packing up all off-season clothing, extra bedding, and anything in your garage that you won’t be using before you move. This allows you to get a good head start on everything without interrupting your day-to-day life because all your essentials are still readily available.

As you get closer and closer to the move date, you will find that fewer and fewer of your items will become essential. If you do this little by little, you won’t be scrambling as much the night before the truck gets loaded!

Label everything

Can one overdo it on labelling? I think not. As you start filling all your boxes I cannot encourage you enough to LABEL, LABEL, LABEL. I recommend labelling the boxes by the room they should be unpacked in within the new home. Be specific too! Rather than “closet” write “upstairs linen closet.” That way, when all your boxes are being unloaded, you and anyone helping you, know exactly where to bring each item. Believe me, there will be so much going on the day of your move, so having the boxes specifically labelled by room will make the process much simpler.

Hire a moving company

This time around, I hired a moving company to take care of all of our furniture and large items, and I was so glad I did.  If you still feel like you need an extra hand with moving, you can always hire a moving company. This can be a really great option if you can’t be at your home and take the time to get everything as organized as you hope.

It can also be a great option if you, or someone you love, have disabilities that make it hard to do these things on your own. You can hire someone to do the heavy lifting for your furniture, just do the labour of packing and unpacking, or someone to take care of all of it!

I felt myself nodding along to everything you’ve written here. Were in the midst of a house move at the moment. It feels like I’ve been hoarding boxes for the last few months now in prep. But things are finally starting to get packed away. I’ve decluttered A LOT in the process too. It’s amazing the things you keep thinking you’ll use, but then never actually do

This is so relevant to me right now as I’m hoping to move soon! You’re tips are really helpful and a good reminder I need to start picking up boxes. I’m a big fan of labelling boxes in detail when I move. For my kitchen I even label what’s inside the box because there’s nothing worse than not being able to cook on your first few days because you can’t find something 🙂

These will be of use for sure in the next year! I have moved before with my family and for how much packing seemed easy it never was! my mum stocked in boxes and we labelled everything, which made it easy! Decluttering was a huge help even if I think we didn’t do enough of it before packing! x

Decluttering is definitely the most important thing!!!! When we moved 5 years ago it was hectic! We were supposed to have 2 weeks to get everything together and then the realtor came back and said nope, we only had 3 days to pack our entire house! 13 years of clutter my mom had saved since my brother and I were kids, plus a whole host of family storage. It was crazy. Decluttering is now staple whenever I’m moving things around after that. Try to keep things done to a minimum and only what really makes me happy. Great post!
