Moving can be so stressful and time-consuming so it’s important to be organized as soon as you know or decide to move!

Our last move was about a year ago and it went really smoothly because we planned and did everything in advance. I did a ton of research to ensure that we picked a home that was right for us!

Whether you’re renting or owning a place, there are lots of things that you need to keep in mind beforehand to make sure your home is in great condition for you to live in!

Have you moved lately? If so, how was your experience?! I’d love to know below.

Sometimes moving isn’t really a choice that you’ve made and you have to evacuate the current place you live in! I totally understand the pressure you’ll be in when you’re in a rush to move into a new place so preparation is key.

Your home is your sanctuary and as I always say, you need to be able to feel happy and cozy in your home! Take the time to do the research before moving in and you’ll thank yourself later!

Do you find moving stressful or exciting?

Here are 5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving:

Initial Walkthrough

Searching for your next home is fun and exciting but you want to make sure that it is suited for you and your health!

Whether you’re buying or renting a new house, it’s so important to do a thorough initial walkthrough. Once you’re viewing a house, it’s important to keep track of things such as mold, rust, cracks, leaks and/or water stains.

Leaving these problems will have long-term effects on you and your home like getting you sick or having damaged items.

Be sure to walk through the home and note anything you see that could potentially be a danger to you before moving in. If you rent, you’ll need to notify the landlord and let them know what you see before signing any leases or contracts!

Continue reading 5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving…

Some landlords will ask you to take care of it and they’ll handle the bill or if you own the home, you’ll need to do everything yourself. It’s crucial that you hire some professionals to handle this job and not DIY. You could end up doing more harm than good.

Nash Everett provides indoor air quality guidance, answers and corrective measures at a reasonable budget for homeowners, individuals and property owners in New Jersey. If you’re looking for experts in mold removal in Malboro, New Jersey, they are the ones to call!

House Upkeep

If you are renting, the upkeep of the house is technically not your full responsibility. Although it is the landlord’s responsibility, you’ll need to make sure that you’re on the same page before moving in and seeing how often they do maintenance and if there are any contractors that come in for routine things.

Some of the house upkeep to consider are:

  •  Cutting the lawn
  • Shoveling snow
  • Duct cleaning
  • Plumbing or HVAC maintenances
Continue reading 5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving…

Vicinity and Commute

The location of your home is crucial as you want to be in the vicinity of places that you go to often such as your workplace and grocery shops. A good thing to keep note of before you commit to moving into a new place is the routes to get to places.

If you don’t drive, is there transit around? Can you walk to places? If you do drive, how long is the drive round trip? Are there any obstacles or anything in the way?

Search up on Google maps your commute or even try it yourself and see if this is something you can do daily/weekly!

Cooling and Heating Units

If you live in a place that has cold winters and hot summers, proper functioning cooling and heating units are a must! Don’t be afraid of testing out both and asking the landlord questions to ensure that you’ll be comfortable in your home.

If you’re familiar with the area, you’ll know what the temperatures are, if not, do a bit of research and see what the winters and summers are like!

If you’re buying a house, you are able to get the full report on how often equipment is maintained. If you’re renting, you can ask as you wouldn’t want your equipment breaking when it’s freezing or scorching temperatures outside!

Rental Insurance

I don’t know if it’s just me but I am big on contracts and having things down on paper! It’s so nice to have peace of mind on things specifically for your home. There are tons of places to get rental insurance and with a quick Google search, you’re able to find an insurance company that covers renters in no time!

Some of the things rental insurance covers are:

  • Home Break Ins and Personal Liability
  • Fire Damage
  • Water Damage
  • Living Expenses
  • Medical Payments

If you’re reading this article on 5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving Into a New Home because you plan on moving soon, congratulations!

Moving is seriously so exciting and it’s always nice to have a change of scenery. I cannot stress this enough, it is so important to be prepared and organized beforehand.

There are always going to be some things that go wrong or sideways and that’s life! You’ll want to free yourself up to deal with things on moving day instead of worrying about things you could’ve done weeks ago.

I hope this article helped and you’ll be ticking these things off when looking for a new home!

What are other things you need to know before moving into a new home? Let me know in the comments!

Lynn

These are great tips! We had to do a very sudden move last year and it was super stressful. My partner and I love our new place, but I 100% wish we’d tested out the heating before agreeing to move in. It’s constantly FREEZING xx

Great tips! Home inspections are part of buying a home in the States and I’m so glad they are. We had the previous owners fix all of the issues before we signed the papers to buy our house and I’m so glad we did. It would have cost us a fortune! I definitely agree about rental insurance. It is pretty cheap (about $10/month) and can save you from lots of headaches if something happens to the place you are renting.

Great post! There’s so much to look into. I’ve not had to move too many times myself but I helped my ex move a few times and some of the things we saw were awful. One place didn’t even have working electrics and holes in the upstairs floorboards and they said it was ready to move in…x
