HERE IS HOW TO MAKE SPICY GARLIC BUTTER UDON:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
Most of the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store. Udon noodles are usually stocked in the international or refrigerated Asian foods aisle, while soy sauce, chili oil, and sesame seeds are commonly available in most supermarkets. If you have an Asian grocery store nearby, you’ll find an even larger variety of fresh or frozen udon noodles and different styles of chili oil.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
Here is the list of ingredients you need to make this yummy udon noodles dish!
- Udon Noodles
- Salted Butter
- Soy Sauce
- Chilli Oil
- Green Onions
- Sesame Seeds
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Honestly, one small sauce pot is all you really need for this and a cooking utensil of your choice! I fully measured out this recipe, and it is the perfect amount for me but you can also eyeball the sauce and taste as you go to your liking so measuring spoons aren’t necessarily needed!
CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
You bet! This recipe is so so simple and works so well when you’re pressed for time and just want a yummy easy dinner!
Some ideas you can make to spruce up this recipe are:
- Adding a fried or soft-boiled egg on top!
- Adding any vegetables like thinly sliced onions, cabbage, carrots, bok choy or spinach
- Adding some protein like shrimp, beef, chicken or tofu
- If you want to be a little bolder and change up the flavour profiles a little bit, you can also add a little bit of peanut butter or sesame!
WHAT DOES SPICY GARLIC BUTTER UDON TASTE LIKE?
These noodles are rich, buttery, savory, and just the right amount of spicy. The butter creates a silky sauce that coats every strand of chewy udon, while the soy sauce adds deep umami flavor. Chili oil brings a gentle heat that balances the richness without overpowering the dish. Finished with fresh green onions and sesame seeds, every bite is warm, comforting, and incredibly satisfying.
Udon noodles are very slippery and chewy so if you love a chewy bite, udon noodles are the best!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
- Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
- Freezer: Not recommended, as udon noodles were already frozen then thawed and it would change the texture again!
To reheat, warm the noodles in a skillet over medium heat with a splash of water to loosen the sauce, or microwave until heated through.
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?
I LOVE noodles and can’t live without them but I also know how instant ramen or noodle packets contain high amounts of sodium and other ingredients that should not be consumed daily. I have been experimenting with making my sauces at home lately and it’s been such a game changer! Something about homemade sauces gives it a yummy elevated taste!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
I personally love using frozen udon noodles! I almost always keep some on hand in the freezer because it’s super easy to just run under cold water to defrost in minutes and cook them! For more spice of course, use more chilli oil and double/triple/quadruple the recipe to make for meal preps!
