I feel like cherries are slept on for all the nutritional benefits that it provides! Cherries are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that are amazing for you and your wellbeing. They are packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals. Have you ever tried a black forest cake?

A black forest cake is a rich and decadent chocolate cake with cherries in between the layers! Growing up, it was one of my favorite cakes and this smoothie reminds me of it! You can drink it as a smoothie or make a smoothie bowl and add some of your favorite toppings to make it a fuller meal!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE A CHERRY CHOCOLATE PROTEIN SMOOTHIE:

WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?

The ingredients to make this dark cherry and chocolate smoothie can be found anywhere. The recipe is really only 4 ingredients which you may already have at home! I like to keep things super simple. I used frozen dark cherries that I find in my frozen fruit section of the grocery store, my favourite chocolate protein powder that I buy from Costco, some 2% milk that you can find in the dairy section of any grocery store and ice!

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?

The ingredients to make this delicious nutrient and protein packed smoothie are:

  • Sweet Dark Cherries
  • Milk
  • Protein Powder
  • Ice

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

You’ll need a really good blender for this! I find this to be really thick to blend up and honestly, even my own blender has troubles blending everything up! I am eyeing purchasing the Ninja BL780C, Ninja Supra Kitchen System with Blender and Food Processor really soon! Aside from this, you pretty much just add everything to the blender and you can eye the ingredients if you’d like but I like to measure everything out as I count my calories and protein intakes so you’ll want to have measuring cups/spoons if you’re doing the same!

It also helps to have a super cute cup, straw and or bowl for your smoothie! I swear when my food looks cute, it makes me more excited to enjoy it!

Here are some of my Amazon kitchen favs!

CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?

You sure can substitute or add anything to this recipe that you’d like! I love to keep my recipes as simple as I possibly can but there are always days where I want to add more or less to my daily recipes! Here are a few suggestions you can do to this recipe:

  • Use chocolate milk or add chocolate syrup for extra chocolatey goodness!
  • Add other fruits like frozen strawberries or cranberries
  • Add in some hemp hearts, chia seeds, etc
  • Add in some greens like spinach or kale!

WHAT DOES A CHERRY CHOCOLATE PROTEIN SMOOTHIE LIKE?

BLACK FOREST CAKE. I repeat, BLACK FOREST CAKE!!! If you’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying a black forest cake, this is what this smoothie reminds me of! Not everyone agrees but I truly believe chocolate and cherries go together. The sweetness from the cherries and the also the sweet, rich and decadent flavour from the chocolate truly makes this such a delicious treat!

HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?

With most smoothies, it would be consumed as soon as you make it however, if you are planning on prepping this ahead of time, it should only be the night before if you’re having this in the morning! You can pack the ice and cherries together so in the morning, you’d add that with your milk and chocolate protein then blend it up. I would say it only really saves a couple of minutes so you don’t really have to prep this!

As most smoothies, it melts fast so drink or eat it immediately! It’s a thicker consistency so if you are drinking it, you can let it melt just a little bit for easy sipping!

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?

Yes! My mom grew up in the Philippines and migrated to Canada in her late 20’s as a nanny. My mom grew up poor and one of the oldest in the family, sp she had to start working at a young age to help provide for her family. She never had opportunities to enjoy cake as it was a luxury so when she came to Canada and saw black forest cake in the grocery stores that you can easily purchase, she was happy that she got to enjoy cake!

Growing up, my mom would often get the little black forest cakes in the grocery stores and come time for my birthdays, I would often ask for it as my birthday cake! I haven’t had black forest cake in a while but this smoothie just brings back so many great memories!

ANY OTHER NOTES?

No other notes for this one, enjoy!

Oh wow, this looks amazing! I love acai and smoothie bowls, so this is right up my alley. I’ve never had cherries in a smoothie bowl before, though – it looks delicious!
