I am a pickle girl through and through and this love is not limited to just pickles. It is EVERYTHING pickled! I went to Fogo de Chão with my family in Seattle a few years back. If you don’t know what this is, it is a Brazillian Steakhouse restaurant chain. There were so many yummy meats but I kid you not, all I wanted to eat was the pickled onions at the salad bar.

I kept going back for their red pickled onions and I would just fill a plate with them haha. I’m laughing just thinking about it now but it was that good and complimented the grilled meats so good! I can’t eat at Brazilian steakhouses all the time but I can make spicy pickled onions at home!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE SPICY PICKLED ONIONS:

WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?

The ingredients for this recipe can be found in any grocery store! You don’t need too much for this recipe which is great! You should hopefully have most of these in your pantry as well. Of course, you will need 1 red onion which you can find in the product section. I haven’t really tested with any other kind of onions besides red onions but I kid you not, the main reason I use red onions is because it has such a pretty color haha!

Other than that, you should have everything on hand already or be able to find it fairly quickly from your grocery store! You’ll need some vinegar, water, white sugar, salt and chilli flakes to make the brine!

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?

All you’ll need to make these delicious spicy pickled onions are:

  • Red Onion
  • White Vinegar
  • Water
  • White Sugar
  • Salt
  • Chilli Flakes

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

The recipe is so easy! You pretty much just need a small sauce pot and a cutting board and knife for the onions! I like to do thin onion slices but of course, you have free will to cut the onions in whatever form that you like! Then you’ll just need some kind of glass jar to store it in. I’m a big mason jar user but any glass container with an airtight lid will do!

Here are some of my Amazon kitchen favs:

CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?

This is a very very basic pickled onion recipe so the great thing is that you can make so many substitutions or add ingredients to spruce this up as you please!

Here are some great ideas to change this spicy pickled onions recipe up!

  • Adding some fresh herbs like dill or thyme
  • Adding garlic cloves
  • Adding peppercorns, mustard seeds, coriander seeds
  • Adding some citrus like orange or lemon (may change color)
  • Adding dried herbs like all spice, loves, cumin, bay leaves
  • Adding some honey or maple syrup to make it sweeter
  • Adding some ginger

WHAT DO SPICY PICKLED ONIONS TASTE LIKE?

Anything pickled is very vinegary so each bite is a delicious tangy punch! Spicy pickled onions are a bold and tangy treat that combine the sharp bite of thinly sliced onions with a fiery kick of heat. The brine is infused with a zesty blend of vinegar, sugar, and a kick of chili flakes or fresh peppers, creating the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors. Each bite delivers a crisp crunch, with the warmth of spice lingering on the palate, making them an irresistible addition to tacos, burgers, sandwiches, or even enjoyed straight from the jar. Perfect for anyone who loves a flavorful punch with their pickles!

HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?

Pickled onions can last for a really long time due to the vinegar, salt and sugar acting as a preservative! I generally like to keep them for up to 3 months but honestly, since this recipe is only for 1 red onion, it doesn’t last that long as you can eat it by itself or with any meal! I’ve even had it for breakfast 😂

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?

If you read the introduction of this blog post, you know that I love anything pickled! Sometimes I can just eat a plate or pickles or pickled onions for dinner haha I love being able to make this at home and having it ready in the fridge whenever I’m wanting some tangy!

ANY OTHER NOTES?

Of course, remove the chilli flakes if you don’t want it to be spicy! Enjoy xo

I’ve been looking into pickling stuff as I think it would be great to try out, and this recipe/idea is perfect to start out with. I like onions on various dishes/foods and think pickling them myself will add an extra level of enjoyment!
