Being a homeowner will forever be a dream of mine and it’s what keeps me going every day.

I grew up with 2 immigrant parents who were trying to adapt to a whole different culture. I had the most magical childhood but our family never owned a house as my parents focused on saving money for me to go to college.

I didn’t feel the need to have a house when I was young because the neighbourhood that I lived in was all rental properties but when I was a teenager, I started wanting to do more with my bedroom and I was told no by my parents as they were afraid of the damages or generally just not feeling that knowledgable about doing anything to our rental apartment.

Although probably acting bratty, I respected their wishes but knew I one day wanted to have the ability to decorate and renovate my own home in the future.

Fast forward years later, my husband and I are renting a townhouse and saving up to purchase our own property soon and I can’t wait! It’s a huge purchase and I know a lot of people don’t care about owning property anymore.

Do you want to own your own place or are you happy with renting? I’d love to know in the comments!

Owning your own property is definitely a lot of work and a huge commitment so you really need to weigh the pros and cons and ask yourself a lot of questions with finances in the back of your mind at all times.

You’ll also especially in the months leading up to and in your first year of owning, have to make a lot of sacrifices. I find myself making sacrifices a lot now to make sure I don’t lose track of what I really want which is to have a condo or apartment by the end of next year.

It’s a roller coaster of a journey but there’s no journey I’d rather be in at this point in my life!

Here are 5 Things to Look Forward to as a Home Owner:

Drilling Holes in Walls

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’d know that DIY wall art is one of my favourite pieces of home decor! I love changing up my wall art every season using printables and hanging my frames and canvases up! As a renter, we always need to be careful with what we’re drilling and if our landlord will end up being super specific and dinging our deposits when we move!

Painting

Paint is super expensive especially depending on what and where you want to paint! The tenants who lived in our rental before us had little kids so there are lots of pieces on the wall that are chipped and scratched. As much as it currently bothers me, I’m trying not to do anything to our rental place except minor decor cover-ups as I’m trying to save as much as I can to purchase in the next year or so and it’s worth it to me!

On the other hand, I have seen lots of people who do a lot with their rental homes and it looks absolutely stunning!

Lots of DIY Projects

Although I am fully capable of doing lots of DIY projects in our current rental, I would love to go above and beyond and create my own pieces but this would require me to buy tools and machines that I don’t think are worth it right now. I would love to move out of our place with the least amount of stuff possible so buying new drills and saws and the works is not in the cards till I own my home!

Furniture Shopping

Are you like me and love looking at beautiful and new pieces of furniture? Oh man, I swear a fun day for me would be spending my day looking through Target, IKEA, Homesense and trying out and styling some gorgeous pieces!

Furniture gets so heavy so quickly so I haven’t been buying any new things aside from essentials until we move but you bet I’ve got a full wish list for everything that I want so far! I’m going for a french modern style in a few years that I’m excited for!

Landscaping

One of the things that I am super excited about is having to control the landscaping of my house! I grew up in an apartment and now living in a townhouse and landscaping was the thing I always wanted to have a say in! I am all about aesthetics and want to have my home be beautiful inside and out.

There is nothing better than looking back and realizing how hard you’ve worked and things coming together! Regardless of owning a house, I am so happy that I can do things to make my home as cozy as it can possibly be.

Are there some things that you’re looking forward to when you’re a homeowner? Let me know in the comments!

Lynn

Decorating is my FAV thing. But it’s also very frustrating because I’m a result now person. But these are all the good things to look forward to with home owning. We’ll not talk about the other stuff! XD
