HERE IS HOW TO MAKE A DIY POPCORN COSTUME:

WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE MATERIALS TO MAKE THIS DIY POPCORN COSTUME?

This DIY Popcorn costume is an excellent DIY costume to make because it is super easy and basic that you probably have these items in your house already and if not, the dollar store most likely has everything! The only material that may be harder to source would be the red and white striped bottoms. I found lots of great options online from retailers like Amazon and Shein but you can of course, purchase bottoms of your choosing from anywhere! You can also visit a thrift store to find items too!

Aside from the red and white striped bottoms, you’ll need any white top. I used a white crop top as I used high waisted red and white striped bottoms but you can also just use a regular white t-shirt and tuck it in. I just used white sandals that I bought from Walmart for the summer but use any black or white shoes that you already have!

You’ll need some white paper and colored printer to print out the popcorn logo. You can also hand draw it if you are able to! You’ll also need to use white paper to crumple up pieces and a yellow marker to draw on some butter! I used a hot glue gun to stick the crumpled popcorn pieces to my black headband but you are welcome to use some tape or other adhesive!

DIY Popcorn Costume - What You Need - Lynn Mumbing Mejia

WHAT ARE THE MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THIS DIY POPCORN COSTUME?

To get started on your DIY popcorn costume, you’ll need some basic materials. The main components that you need to create the costume aside from the actual clothing pieces like the white top and red and white striped bottoms are the popcorn logo and pieces which need some paper and a yellow marker.

Other materials include tape, scissors, and a hot glue gun for attaching the popcorn to your headband.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

This DIY Popcorn costume is awesome because the equipment you need to create it is super basic household/crafting items! All you’ll really need for this DIY costume is scissors, tape, hot glue gun/tape!

CAN I SUBSTITUTE ANY MATERIALS OUT?

You absolutely can alter this costume to make it your own! In fact, I highly encourage it! I love making DIY costumes and 100% love using what I have and can afford. That is my favorite part of making these costumes! I love the ability to reuse or recreate costumes as much as I want and need. All the materials can be easily found at the dollar store or craft store.

I find costumes from stores cost an arm and a leg and to wear it for one day?! That is not something that sits right with me. I love making costumes that I can easily recycle too like with this popcorn costume, I can just recycle the paper pieces after.

In my opinion, the popcorn logo puts the costume altogether so I would recommend keeping this as is but if you have a cricut then of course a vinyl sticker or iron on patch would be great to use as paper is not durable!

I use a black headband but you can absolutely glue the popcorn pieces to hair clips!

DOES THE COSTUME LAST TO USE FOR THE FOLLOWING YEARS?

Yes and no! Because this DIY costume has a lot of paper elements, it will not hold up too well over the years however, because a lot of the costume is made of paper elements, you can easily remake them if you want to rewear the costume over the years!

If you do want to make this costume a more durable one, I would highly recommend swapping out the paper and use materials like vinyl or fabric to make this! If you have a cricut then that would be fantastic!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT TOGETHER?

OMG, this popcorn costume was SO EASY to put together, I could’ve done this in my sleep! It took me a total of 15 minutes to put together and I loved it!

You can easily throw this together in the evening and have it ready to go for the next morning or if you’re pressed for time to just throw it together last minute!

INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS COSTUME?

Like I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I LOVE DIY food costumes! I find that food costume ideas exercise my creativity x10 more and they are so fun! I find that with characters or objects, you tend to have to follow a theme more strictly so creativity is a bit more limited but with food, the sky is the limit!

I saw so many crazy good popcorn costumes on Pinterest and knew that I wanted to recreate a version that’s a bit easier and great to wear anywhere! I find that on Pinterest, the costumes are very big which is great but for someone like me who wears their costume to the office or a house party, it’s just nicer to have costumes with elements that don’t get in the way of having a fun night or a full workday! That is why I just made the popcorn pieces on the headband instead of all over my body!

STEPS TO PUT TOGETHER THIS DIY POPCORN COSTUME:

Step 1: Cut small pieces of white paper 5″ by 5″ is great but you can always make them smaller or larger! Then crumple each paper up and take a yellow marker and draw some lines of butter! It can be messy and uneven but just make sure that you can clearly see butter from far away as well!

Step 2: Next, get your headband and shape your popcorn pieces into balls and hot glue/tape each piece onto the top of your headband. Add as little or as many as you’d like!

Step 3: Once your popcorn headband is put together, you can put on your white top and red and white striped bottoms.

Step 4: Lastly, just before you leave the house, cut your popcorn logo and place it on your chest/stomach. Put on your popcorn headband, and shoes and have fun in your costume! Bonus points if you lug around a bowl of popcorn!
