I had this really strong craving for a sardine sandwich and it did not go away! I love sandwiches and have been trying to stay away from deli meat and immediately though of sardines. I have been hearing how great sardines are, especially for women so I thought I would make a delicious and easy sandwich recipe to share!

The ingredients to make this delicious sardine sandwich can be found anywhere. All you’ll need is your favorite canned sardines! I love using the brand Millionaries but of course, use any brand you prefer! You can even use different flavoured ones too. I used a bake at home baguette that I found at the grocery store and it was heavenly! You can choose any bread that you prefer. Sourdough would have been my second choice! Aside from this, you’ll need some pantry/fridge staples like mayo and mustard then some fresh produce like arugula, spinach and red onions.

- Canned Sardines
- Fresh Baguette
- Salted Butter
- Mayo
- Mustard
- Red Onions
- Spring Mix (arugula & spinach)
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
This recipe is so easy! I hope that you have made sandwiches before but if not, this one is a great one to start off with for sardine lovers! If you bought a fresh loaf of bread, you’ll need a good bread knife. My life changed when I invested in a good bread knife! Aside from that, you’ll want to thinly slice your onions but that’s it!
Spread your mayo and mustard with whatever you have and use a fork to place the sardines on the sandwich. Here are some of my favorite Amazon kitchen items!
CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
You sure can! We all have different taste buds and that’s what makes us unique! This recipe is super simple so if you want to tailor it to your taste buds, you’re welcome to! Here are some ideas that you can do to spruce up this recipe:
- Add some fresh slices of tomatoes
- Add some cottage cheese for extra protein
- Add a squeeze of fresh lemon and/or lemon zest
- Add some avocado for some creaminess
WHAT DOES A SARDINE SANDWICH TASTE LIKE?
This sardine sandwich tastes bold, savory, and surprisingly comforting. 🥪🐟
The sardines are rich and meaty with a deep umami flavor, almost like tuna but more intense and buttery. Paired with bread, the taste becomes mellow and satisfying! The butter, mayo and mustard add a tanginess and creaminess and the red onions add that bite it needs! The spring mix of spinach and arugula throws everything together with that pop of freshness! Overall, it’s hearty, savory, and a little briny in the best way.
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
A sardine sandwich is best enjoyed fresh, but here’s how long it can safely last:
- At room temperature: no more than 2 hours.
- In the fridge: up to 3 days if wrapped tightly or stored in an airtight container. I enjoyed this for a few days and just popped it in the air fryer at 325F for a few minutes so that everything inside gets heated evenly.

I have been on the side of TikTok where all the ladies are recommending enjoying sardines for all the health and skin benefits and I was sold before they even tried to convince me! I have always loved tinned fish and sometimes I forget that I love it.
I have been on a bread kick for a few months now and I thought of a sardine sandwich being perfect! I had a vision and made it come to life and do not regret it at all!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
Remember that it is tinned fish so IT WILL taste a little bit fishy! If you don’t already like canned sardines, this may not be the recipe for you. If you do like canned sardines, you’re going to love this!

Sardine Sandwich
Ingredients
- 1 Fresh Baguette
- 1 Can Sardines
- 1 Tbsp Salted Butter
- 2 Tbsp Mayo
- 1 Tbsp Mustard
- 1/4 Red Onion thinly sliced
- Spring Mix (arugula & spinach) as much as you want! pack it!
Instructions
- Slice the baguette lengthwise and spread a thin layer of butter on one side then lightly toast.
- Next, spread mayo on the butter side and mustard on the other.
- Add sardines to one side (either side), gently breaking them up if needed.
- Top with sliced red onion and spring mix.
- Close the sandwich, slice, and serve and enjoy!
