BBQ Meatball Eyes
Halloween night is always so fun! Going to school in your costumes all day, then going home, having a quick bite to eat and going trick-or-treating with friends! It’s a feeling like no other! One recipe I’ve been loving is making meatball eyes! I put mine over spaghetti but this is also really good as a snack or appetizer on the side!
These BBQ Meatball Eyes are a fun and spooky twist on classic barbecue meatballs! Made with frozen meatballs coated in BBQ sauce and topped with mozzarella and sliced olives, they look just like creepy little eyeballs.
I love Halloween recipes that are simple to make but still look festive, and this recipe is exactly that. With just a few ingredients, you can turn ordinary meatballs into a fun party appetizer that’s perfect for Halloween gatherings, movie nights, or spooky-season snacking!

HERE IS HOW TO MAKE BBQ MEATBALL EYES:
WHERE CAN I FIND THESE INGREDIENTS?
All of the ingredients for these BBQ Meatball Eyes can easily be found at your local grocery store and this recipe is so fun as it only uses 4 ingredients too!
You can find frozen meatballs in the freezer section, BBQ sauce in the condiment aisle, mozzarella cheese in the dairy section, and sliced olives near the canned vegetables and pickled foods.
Since this recipe only requires a few simple ingredients, it’s an easy appetizer to put together without a lot of shopping or preparation. Perfect for busy people!
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?
You’ll need just four simple ingredients:
- BBQ sauce
- Mozzarella cheese
- Sliced black olives
- Frozen meatballs
The combination of mozzarella and sliced olives creates the creepy eyeball look, while the BBQ sauce adds plenty of sweet and smoky flavor.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
You only need a few basic kitchen tools:
- Small saucepan or bowl
- Spoon
- Knife and cutting board for cutting the mozzarella, if needed
I just cook mine on the stovetop because it’s quite easy, but you can also do this in a slow cooker and have the meatballs soak up all the BBQ sauce for even longer.
CAN I SUBSTITUTE/ADD ANYTHING OUT?
Absolutely! This recipe is easy to customize based on what you have available.
You can use homemade meatballs or refrigerated meatballs instead of frozen meatballs.
For the sauce, try swapping the BBQ sauce with:
- Sweet chili sauce
- Marinara sauce
- Buffalo sauce
- Honey garlic sauce
- Teriyaki sauce
I like using bright red BBQ sauce to give it a “bloody” look!
For the eyeballs, you can substitute fresh mozzarella pearls or small pieces of sliced mozzarella. You could also use a different type of mild white cheese!
Instead of sliced black olives, try using small pieces of cut seaweed or other dark-colored toppings to create the pupils.
For an extra spooky presentation, you can serve the meatballs with additional BBQ sauce or arrange them on a platter with other Halloween-themed snacks!
WHAT DO BBQ MEATBALL EYES TASTE LIKE?
BBQ Meatball Eyes are savoury, cheesy, smoky, and slightly sweet.
The meatballs are tender and flavorful, while the BBQ sauce adds a sweet and tangy flavor with a little smokiness. The melted mozzarella adds a creamy, mild flavor that balances out the richness of the meatballs, while the olives add a salty and slightly briny bite.
They’re basically delicious BBQ meatballs with a fun cheesy topping that makes them perfect for Halloween!
HOW LONG DOES IT KEEP FOR?
Store leftover BBQ Meatball Eyes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3β4 days.
For best results, reheat them in the oven or microwave until the meatballs are heated through and the cheese is melted.
Keep in mind that the mozzarella may change texture slightly after refrigeration and reheating, so these are best enjoyed fresh.
INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS RECIPE?
I’ve actually been making this for a few years now! I always do fun Halloween-themed dinners in the month of October and a very easy recipe I make is spaghetti with meatball eyes! The inspiration for these BBQ Meatball Eyes came from wanting to create a cute and spooky Halloween appetizer using simple ingredients.
Meatballs are already an easy party food, so adding mozzarella and olives to turn them into little eyeballs felt like a fun and simple way to make them Halloween-themed.
I especially love recipes like this because they don’t require special Halloween molds or complicated decorating skills. It’s amazing how a couple of simple ingredients can transform regular meatballs into something festive!
ANY OTHER NOTES?
- Cook the frozen meatballs according to the package directions before assembling, if needed.
- Add the mozzarella near the end of cooking so it only slightly melts! Depending on my mood, haha I don’t even melt the cheese sometimes! I wait for the meatballs to cool and just place the cheese on top!
- Serve the meatballs warm but not piping hot for the best flavour and texture.
- You can make the meatballs ahead of time and add the mozzarella and olive toppings just before serving, but honestly, the meatballs, especially if you’re buying them pre-made, are so easy to put together!
- Arrange them on a platter for a fun Halloween party appetizer.
- Use different sizes of olives to make the “eyes” look even more spooky and silly!
